Helpful Hints for Adopting Out a Pet
Advertising
-
Put a free ad in local and surrounding area newspapers.
-
Make fliers to put in local businesses (with permission). Pet stores, veterinarian offices and pet grooming facilities are good places to start. Pictures always help.
-
Call local pet stores. They may be willing to accept the animal ‘as-is’. Some even provide minimal vet care before adopting it out.
-
Reach out to local animal groups. They are likely to appreciate your efforts and help in some way.
-
Place a listing on Craigslist and similar websites for maximum advertising.
-
If possible, email pictures to WOOFF for them to be put online.
Screening Applicants
-
Have potential applicants fill out an adoption contract (a sample contract can be found here).
-
Before meeting the interested party, use the contract as a guide to verbally question the potential adopters about their intentions and to see if a face-to-face meeting would be worthwhile.
-
Optionally, a home inspection may be done to ensure dogs have a properly secured fenced in area.
-
Arrange for the animal to meet the interested family’s current pets. Discord between new and old pets is a top reason for failed adoptions later on.
-
Call the family’s vet (with their permission) to see if all current pets are up-to-date on shots, if dogs are on a heartworm preventative, and if all pets have been spayed or neutered.
-
A post-adoption visit to the home is also an option.
A parked car could kill your dog.
In one study showed that at 9:30 when the outside temperature was 75 the inside temperature of the car was 130. A dog’s normal temperature ranges from 101.5 to 102.5. At 115 degrees a dog can sustain brain damage.
NEVER LEAVE AN ANIMAL OR SMALL CHILD IN A PARKED CAR!
In the event of heat stroke:
-
Gently place the dog in a tub of cool water or
-
Spray with cool water from a garden hose or
-
Apply ice packs to the head and neck
-
Call a veterinarian as soon as possible
