WINTERIZING YOUR OUTDOOR CANINE PAL
The points below are tips to keeping your outdoor dog
comfortable and healthy during the colder months. If you have other
concerns then are mentioned here please ask your veterinarian's advice.
-
A doghouse big enough for him to get and turn around, but no too
big. Remember his body heat has to heat it up.
-
Bedding for the house should not be blankets and the like. Cloth
bedding does not dry out well and your pet will be sleeping on wet
bedding. Wheat straw dries out well and pack quit a bit in the house.
Don't worry if your dog does not tolerate a door on the house. If
there is plenty of straw he will push some up to the door once he
is inside and this will serve as a door. Cedar chips added to the
straw will help keep odor as well as insects down.
-
Be sure fresh water is available, not frozen. You may need to
increase the amount of food during this time of year due to the
fact your dog will be burning more calories in order to keep warm.
-
Get the annual vaccinations updated if they are due or overdue.
With the body working harder to tolerate the temperatures of the
winter it can be more susceptible to disease.
-
In this area give heartworm prevention all year round. Flea maintenance
should also be continued in a mild winter.
-
Spend time with your dog and be sure he gets plenty of love and
exercise. Remember he is a pack animal and needs contact with you
daily.
