HOUSE TRAINING TIPS

The secret is ...ROUTINE, ROUTINE, ROUTINE ... with a touch of patience and common sense.

  1. You must establish a routine meal schedule — This will get the pup's digestive system on a schedule. Knowing when the pup may need to go will make things easier.

  1. Try not to "free choice" feed your puppy — A puppy that can nibble all day will need to go potty all day.

  1. Get a crate — Whenever you can't watch the pup or when you are not at home, a crate is where the pup should be. He will use his instincts to keep his area clean and it will also keep him from chewing inappropriate items. To be fair, take the age of your pup in months and add 1. This is the number of hours you can expect to have no accident in the crate. The only items you should leave in the crate during this time are ice cubes and a suitable toy. A marrow bone with cheese, marshmallow or peanut butter stuffed in it. Try not to leave a squeaky toy with your pup. They can chew them up and have problems later.

  1. Use a particular route — Use the same route to get the pup outside along with a command that will signal what is going on. For instance, use "Go outside?," then while outside say "Get busy" or "Hurry up." Remember to go to the same potty area, that too will clue him in. Don't be anxious to get back inside. Most pups will urinate then walk around as if to play, then owners bring them in thinking they were finished and find the pup immediately leaving a BM by the door. Pups need a chance to have a BM before they are brought in after urinating.

  1. NEVER punish for an accident — First of all that's all it is an accident and it's our fault. We either weren't paying attention or didn't give the opportunity to go. If you punish a pup you will teach him to hide when he needs to go rather than to ask to go out. If you catch the pup in the act you may say "Hey, Hey Outside." Scoop him up and take him directly to the spot and praise him if he finishes the job.

REMEMBER... Routine for mealtimes, Routine route to go outside, go to the Routine spot and Routinely use a crate and always take the pup out to the spot whenever you release the pup from the crate.

REMEMBER... some accidents are going to happen anyway.

:) GOOD LUCK
